Is the iPhone 6 Camera Leaning toward Serious Imaging?

iPhone 6 Manual Camera Controls in iOS 8

If you're new here, click to subscribe to the latest post

For a long time now, since 2009, Apple's iPhone has been the most popular imaging device uploaded on Flickr.

What Apple is doing to develop the iPhone's controls that many enthusiasts, and all serious photographers demand.  With every control set to Auto every shot taken in any camera is nothing more than the old style Point-N-Shoot camera. Nothing wrong using one, but when you want to allow for more light, or a longer exposure, or wider aperture you are faced with using a regular DSLR camera body which in turn forces you to take a much larger image device along. The trouble is there are times when that larger device is far too inconvenient. Thus the iPhone's attempt at manual controls involving ISO setting, Aperture and Shutter Speedis becoming the standard. Also since Apple has opened up the iOS software code restrictions, developers will be writing to alter even the Auto-Mode sensitivity for better auto exposure settings.

As for the Nokia 1020 and the HTC Sense 6 phones, allowing for white balance adjustments, Apple takes these settings to a whole new level. In the near future Apple will be taking phone imaging as serious as they have taken the cell phone itself. Here's an article from anandtech that explains this in more detail for the photo-files among us.

WWDC 2014 :: Apple Gives Green Light to the Developers

5000 Developers Worldwide Ecstatic at Apple's Attitude for Developers

Every year Apple holds a software developers conference which has always given software code writers an uneasy feeling. This year, 3 years after Steve's passing, Tim Cook's Apple gave them some thing to cheer about. A whole new perspective from the developer's community toward apps created exclusively for iOS operating system apps; openness.

It has always been a feeling of angst when Apple introduces new developments in their OSX and iOS operating systems for a developer because of the hoops they have to jump through in order to get their software accepted. Not this time. Finally Cook has opened a flood of tools for the developers of the world to work with for all of Apple's devices, from apps to OS tweaks and full recoding. From the moment Craig Federighi jumped on stage to the last session, excitement and exhilaration were the key take home feelings.

One has to believe the enthusiasm developers took away this year will be remembered as their best ever attendance at any WWDC onference. 2014 means a radical change and a relationship which all Apple code writers will never forget.

Tim has finally followed Steve Jobs formidable advice, in not asking Steve what to do, but to do what Tim deems best. Tim has, it appears, taken the reigns as Steve had advised. And developers across the world will flood Apple with apps that will make our world a whole lot better, a whole lot faster.

Memorial Day Celebration or Rememberance?

Do we Remember or Celebrate this Holiday?

Memorial Day had been observed on May 30 across the nation ever since that date was established in 1868 by Gen. John A. Logan of Illinois, the commander of the largest organization of Civil War veterans, the Grand Army of the Republic. It was then called Decoration Day, when the graves of Civil War dead were to be decorated with the flowers of spring. As the years passed, it came to include the dead of all America’s wars.

Most of us find the time to gather together and head to the river, or go camping or barbeque a meal. We seem always to be able to rest from work, if our company is generous or we work for an agency. And many of us post a flag on a flag holder. Many of us find the time to recall moments from the past when our loved one, a soldier died. And a few of us actually visit their grave site, or where their ashes were spread. There are parades in honor of the fallen in most communities. Here's hoping your loss was an honorable loss and that you memories and your love for them only enhance your life because of their presence.

Why did Getty Images Allow Free Image Use?

Take Our Images and Run

Sounds like Getty Images has given everyone the right to use their images online free and unrestricted use of most of their photos. The intent may be far different than their dilemma.

What Started This Unrestricted Use?

Ever published a website or a blog and needed a photo to accompany an article you've written, or seen images associated with an article you've read? Chances are that 50% of the articles are using photos without permission. Getty along with most of us who publish photos can't very effectively stop people from taking the photos and copy and pasting them for their purposes. Most of the uses are not for profit so most of us don't really get too excited. They are added to a page for example of what is being written or displayed, so instead of chasing them with our attorney's on retainer, we let it go.

What Getty has done is to allow the use as an embedded image, meaning they can then track the use of for editorial uses only. That will take a ton of work, coding all of the images for that purpose. Perhaps they have already done all the work, but it seems doubtful considering the many millions of images available, some 35 million to date, from what is reported.

Did They Really Have No Choice?

It seems they have been looking at protecting images for years without much success. I'll take this security attempt in my next post, so stay tuned to the second part of this news, just reported today at CNN News.

Where is all the Interesting Photo Art?

What Interesting Photo Art is Out There?

We could go into the subject of what 'Interesting Art' is, and spend a few years debating it, (feel free adding comments if you like), but what I'd rather do is seek out what I believe to be interesting art, in the field of photography. I like to keep focused on what I love and that is shooting creatively with my cameras and using PP or Post Processing).

Moon Through Branches

     ( no post processing )

I was out on a night when the full moon rose in a fog, and since I couldn't capture the shot I wanted, I thought why not try to get something interesting. And after trying several positions, I ended with shooting through branches on a tree, with what ended up being, a faint glow of a face, if you will, only because of a pattern of leaves. And even this shot took perhaps a dozen tries.

Letters on Rusty Door

( post processing )

Here's one I created from a shot I took of an unusual subject, a rusted door with dirt and debris on it. Then after some color selection and adding of the letters of my business name, I felt it was interesting enough to complete as a business card background. I find it energizing to seek out subjects and then altering them for creative purposes, and from this example the subject can be far less than interesting to start with. In fact some of the most interesting subjects you can use will be of items you wouldn't think twice about upon choosing them.

From Yellow/Green to Bleak

 ( post processing )

With this one I shot a landscape with loads of yellows and greens and brownish/red bark, then muted the colors to present a rather bleak, washed out look, fitting for this locale while minimally artsy.

With this landscape view I wanted to utilize a more dramatic effect, as if the weather were about to prepare the viewer for a once-in-a-lifetime event. Unlike the example above this one, the treatment produced a surreal yet acceptable and enjoyable push of more than realistic color. It could be interpreted as an almost biblical feeling.

And now combining a bit of both the washed out look, with the color push above, this workflow allows for the Spring fresh colors of the flowers, and at the same time, reflects the dilapidated barn and bleak surrounding landscape.

Creating the Photo Art Effect

When looking for examples of Photo Art, keep in mind you may favor one over another, rejecting many because of your preferences. But don't automatically reject any one, if from comparing and combining, you might be able to work out a truly enjoyable piece to live with, or gift to someone you appreciate, or sell if you are so inclined. You might take a look online at galleries, slideshows, portfolios and blogs where photo artists tend to maintain their photography, just for the sake of that creative spark to juice up your talents. I find the more time I spend just taking an image with interesting subject matter, creating layers, using an array of Photoshop tool adjustments, the more I add to my creative talent. There's plenty of help out there for using CS5/CS6 if you need it, and from time to time most of us do, or feel free to ask a question below.
