Finding the Art you choose to live with

 When you moved out of your parent's home, you landed on an empty nest even after all of your furniture was in place. Why? You saw empty walls.



That was your first awareness that it's nearly impossible to live in a cave regardless the quality of furnishings and paint colors. So you set out to find art most likely at a reasonable price point. But where did you find these pieces? Too many of us selected cheaply printed photography or graphic hangings. At least we had art on the walls. After awhile we began thinking about our choices. It is this time, this entry to that awareness that we always truly wanted more than that. We wanted art for art's sake. Remember that phrase? It is true. But as true is we want art that we can choose to live with for extended periods of time. Art that speaks to us. Warms our hearts, engages flashes of memories, or excites our senses with the art. When we look at the art we've chosen, we should be able to see what we wish to, hear the splash of the waterfall, smell the rose, hear the wind through the canyons, and trees, and feel the warmth of sun on the rocks or our hair. Even touch the smooth flower petals, or the raspy bark of a Eucalyptus, pine, fir or cherry tree. 

We don't merely want a pic of an object, we want to smell it, feel it, and we want that to last. That means the photography art has to be special enough to be able to last for more than a month or so. We are choosing in essence a companion to our moods in our homes. So rather than heading back to an all-in-one-store, perhaps we begin the journey online looking at art that rewrites our gratification needs, some of which are heartfelt, some humorous, and some outrageously energizing.

Find the Red Maple on Fire in the Rain at my Photo Art Site

Just for the fun of it, I challenge you to locate a Maple tree on Fire in the Rain  Awhile back I was out shooting when a brief, if somewhat heavy pattering of rain hit, and I had no choice other than to shoot this maple tree. Later as I looked it over using Affinity Photo software, I decided to dance it up a bit. So I spent the better part of 3 hours using several photo editing tools and layers trying my best to make this a standout image that some would end buying, and hanging on their wall. I have used it, and I have gifted it for birthdays and Christmas, as gifts. It's one of my favorites from a sense of impact and tranquilness. It simply works for me and I hope you enjoy the fun getting there. From Dull to Dramatic Photography

While this may not be dramatic in a bright happy colorful sense it is so, if in a dark and foreboding way. With this subject I will admit it was easier than if I had chosen an image which was bright and colorful with lots of sunlight, still even then one can cause an ordinary image to appear near HDR without all the added work and in many cases the use of software to produce the tonal mapping needed. Take this original image of a door within an abandoned barn, with the use of flash. From Drop Box As you can see the amount of light hitting this well defines all of the aspects of the term abandoned, the failing paint, the rust on the handle, the cobweb within the latch opening and generally the decadent condition overall. This much light reflects really more than I want in this photo, so rather than lowering the exposure and losing too much information (btw this works well in most well-lit sunjects, i.e. lowering exposure, I am not the best at flash adjustments, so I use PP or post

Save for Web? or Save As? EXIF is the criteria

Is EXIF an important issue to you? If not you won't get much from this. On the other hand if you are considering selling your images online this could give you an option for uploading. Let's say you are about to send some photos to a website. If your upload is to a social networking site (SNS) it's a simple 'Save for Web' command and its gone. You don't care if EXIF data attaches itself to the file or not. The photos are only for sharing. The trouble is we tend to get into a habit of uploading because of habit. And if you are sending files to an online gallery for sale or to your agent for rights managed images, or even a gallery in which you simply want to hold while adding more images for future use and you have the settings available to anyone you don't know, EXIF is crucial. And 'Save for Web' is not the choice you want since it has parameters for stripping out all of the metadata in order to make the upload quick. This is when you will be using

Shooting Christmas Can be Fun.......or........

Shooting can be a lot of fun. Formal shots seem to take a lot of prep work if one wants to get everything perfect, like making sure nothing in the background conflicts with the subject which is your critical Aunt saying she doesn't like it that Bernie's coat is so ugly hanging on the wall behind me. Or just the usual clutter which can easily invade a nice grouping of the family. It pays to take the time to pick out a bare wall or large window so long as the flash will not bounce back at you. In the other hand if you are going for the candid approach, and want to avoid the background clutter which is unavoidable in most cases, try placing a lens of portrait class, say a Canon EF 135mm f/2L USM Lens for Canon SLR Cameras which when opened wide you'll produce enough bokeh, or background blur to avoid most of the stuff and leave you with a wonderful clear shot of your Aunt who won't be able to critique your photo without using a compliment. Your Customer Doesn't Just Buy a Print.............

What a Client Really Wants A customer who buys your prints, doesn't just buy the pictures. They buy into the way you do your prints. And the way we shoot is to listen to the client. When I produce an image, be it a portrait shoot, a Hospital's need for a print, a University or a Corporate entity, I have to think about the reason they want to use the prints. A corporate client may want explosive splash, a University may want to explore a social aspect, a parent may want the lasting beauty of their Daughter, and so on. A baby shoot for a GrandParent vs a young couple can be quite an array of differing expectations. One couple recently told me "We want our baby's pictures for GrandPa and GrandMa's special photo wall. I want them to be able to show them off to their visiting friends and family." So the result was to produce photos which were rather a soft, cute, sweet smiling little face that we all love to look at, yet with an angle from a Grand Parenting

Are You Shooting what You Want?

It's High Time You Shot What You Like   I've caught myself reviewing my image files so many times, in order to weed out any imperfect photos, anything with blown out areas, or ones without any detail in the shadows, blur in the subject, incorrect subject framing and so on, just moving through the process of my preferred workflow. Then suddenly I'll question even why I spent the time shooting this subject. It was nothing I was particularly interested in, it simply fell into my lens. And that's ok if you don't have a subject in mind when you set out for a day of photography.  But over the years, I've developed a way to avoid this, being that time is so precious as I age, is to create a document with categories of shoots I want to newly capture or revisit.  I will even set into the document, a route link, a gps or an address, if possible.
