Thanksgiving Without a Turkey?

We are seriously considering a full-blown, well I should say, almost All-Out Thanksgiving Dinner with all the trimmings, just no Holiday bird or Ham. 

 Nope we are not vegetarians, and certainly not Vegans, not that there's (Jerry Seinfeld) anything wrong with that. But we've been doing a lot of reading and testing the healthy waters of food intake choices. Eggs with mushrooms and onions, but no breakfast sausage or cheese for this morning's breakfast. Last night was broccoli cheddar soup with a lot of extra cruciferous veggies, broccoli, cauliflower and orange and yellow carrots added. No lunch yesterday and a chicken sausage with eggs and home grown red potatoes steam-fried at a very low heat.  So I guess for the last 3 meals only one with meat.

It seems the older we get the more people we know who are experiencing heart and cancer issues. So it only makes sense to move in a far healthier direction when it comes to eating far less meat. Tonight it will be Sockeye salmon with some frozen or fresh organic veggies and perhaps a hard roll.  

No milk, very little cheese, very little ground grass fed beef, mostly fish and some chicken and a little veal. That's how we're headed this years Thanksgiving feast. But we will enjoy all the typical holiday trimmings, the green bean casserole, yup with Campbell's mushroom soup, home-grown and mashed potatoes, stuffing, dinner rolls and cranberries. So what we substitute for a turkey? We're thinking Halibut. Next year it may be veal or elk. 

Don't forget your workout, walk or run routine. I'm sure by now you have your phone set with an alarm so you can't forget to get to it everyday. 

Here's hoping your Thanksgiving's Day is getting healthier too. And if you are having a turkey, perhaps this year you'll think about a natural one or a wild turkey you bagged earlier in the Spring.

Mushroom in September

When you spot mushrooms, fungi, you are seeing a relationship between the roots of trees (really any plants roots at all) and the mycorrhizae or the relationship of fungi and roots, nourishing themselves, which has become to be referred to as a symbiotic one, in which (and I quote) as the fruiting tips of a vast underground lattice intertwined with those roots. The world beneath the earth is as rich as the one above. There are exceptions of course, such as the fungi that grow on downed logs, which are only different in that they are not a relationship with underground roots.

Rosh Hashana for the year 2019 starts on Monday, September 30th ending the 2 day celebration at sundown on Tuesday, September 31. Because the Jewish calendar is a lunar calendar, the holiday begins on the sunset of the previous day on the evening of Sunday, September 29th.

Sam Hill (1857–1931), founder of the Maryhill Museum of Art, was one of the most colorful and influential figures in the Pacific Northwest in the early 1900s. He was a successful businessman, world traveler, builder of monuments, and early advocate of paved roads.
Hill commissioned the Maryhill Stonehenge Memorial to honor World War I dead from Klickitat County, Washington. The monument was dedicated in 1918—while the war was still rampant—and completed in 1929. He was also responsible for the construction of the Peace Arch in Blaine, Washington—recognizing the close ties between the United States and Canada. It was dedicated in 1921.
At Maryhill, Hill employed engineer Samuel C. Lancaster (1864–1941) and spent three years and $100,000 of his own money building experimental roads on the property—so that skeptics could see the type of highways for which he was advocating. His activism eventually prompted the creation of state highway departments in Washington and Oregon. He was also a force behind construction of the Historic Columbia River Highway and the Interstate Bridge between Portland, Oregon, and Vancouver, Washington.
The permanent Sam Hill exhibition at Maryhill Museum of Art includes some of Hill’s personal possessions, items acquired during his travels, and photos and mementos related to his favorite cause, the Good Roads Movement.

From a bygone era of American history, though this building still exists today. I remember from the days when my Grandpa used to take me fishing. We'd get to the lake early, like 6am early, then when we had the fish in the cooler, we'd drop by the Grange Hall to boast about our catch. memories we have from our childhood never leave us, nor should they.

If you've never been to the 'Palouse Falls State Park', near LaCrosse, Washington, I highly recommend you do so. It will be worth every mile it takes to get there. 

 But if driving there is simply not in your plans, you can view it here Palouse River Canyon Buttes

There so much to see, in both the scablands of the Cheney-Palouse to the basalt cliffs dropping into the canyon where the Palouse River sometimes flows like a meandering stream, or rages and races downstream to Snake River and finally into the Columbia River. And of course the massive Its an historic tale and a modern 2-3 day visit including the wild, if tame, Ground Hogs which do their best to command your attention. But be careful as they sometimes don't distinguish between your offering and your finger. Best just to watch.
