Current Competition

The theme for October 2010, our current competition is "Colors". The submission process for artists ends October 29, 2010. All winners will be selected, announced and be featured on the Light Space & Time website on November 1, 2010 and remain online in the gallery through November 30, 2010. Thereafter, the artworks will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives with links to the artist's websites.

At the bottom of this page is a link to enter this competition, along with the procedure to enter this exhibition. The sizing and labeling of your images is very important. Please size your images, not to exceed 534 x 356 pixels with a resolution of 100. Label your image files in the following manner; last name, image number, competition name, image name. Following is an Example: Smith_1_Surfaces_Wave.jpg. Please fill the entire form and load all three (3) images before sending the upload. Also, you may upload additional images if required, along with the additional entry fees.

After the upload, go to the PayPal Payment Center and make your payment of $9.00. Additional images may be uploaded for $2.00 each. The PayPal Account Name is submissions@lightspacetime.com. After the successful upload of your images and the successful payment through PayPal, you will receive a confirmation of each procedure. A group exhibition of the top five finalists will be held online at the Light Space & Time – Online Art Gallery during the month of November 2010. Awards will be for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In addition, 2 artists will recognized with Honorable Mention awards.

Here's to Your Wall Art Adventure First things first; whatever you do, don't just wander about and hastily make a decision on the spot. Do your research. Know what impacts your decision, allow yourself a little time to really let the emotive part of the art search grab ahold of you, and only then make the leap.  Just know you're doing it for the right reasons. October is Coming, Get Your Gear Out

Rainy , cloudy, windy weather is fast approaching or already has reached us and it's time to pull out all of our photography gear to make sure everything gets its once a year review. The first thing I do is line it all up and make cleaning a priority. Sure we all wipe our lenses and clean our cameras off when we finish an assignment or even a simple shoot, but what I'm referring to is a full force cleaning on all parts to include the sensor, the filters if you still use them, the camera bodies and your lenses, the focus rings, the tripod base, the lens caps, everything you normally clean but not a quick wipe. You should have a sensor cleaning kit, if not look into one, I still like the Copper Hill products for basic sensor cleaning, about $30. Then it helps to keep a Giottos Rocket Blower in your bag, about $40. You can buy a number of different kits or single pieces but I stay with the simple kit and blower, but if you like here's a b

Your Customer Doesn't Just Buy a Print.............

What a Client Really Wants A customer who buys your prints, don't just buy the pictures. They buy into the way you do your prints. And they way we shoot is to listen to the client. When I produce an image, be it a portrait shoot, a Hospital's need for a print, a University or a Corporate entity, I have to think about the reason they want to use the prints. A corporate client may want explosive splash, a University may want to explore a social aspect, a parent may want the lasting beauty of their Daughter, and so on. A baby shoot for a GrandParent vs a young couple can be quite an array of differing expectations. One couple recently told me "We want our baby's pictures for GrandPa and GrandMa's special photo wall. I want them to be able to show them off to their visiting friends and family." From Dull to Dramatic Photography

While this may not be dramatic in a bright happy colorful sense it is so, if in a dark and foreboding way. With this subject I will admit it was easier than if I had chosen an image which was bright and colorful with lots of sunlight, still even then one can cause an ordinary image to appear near HDR without all the added work and in many cases the use of software to produce the tonal mapping needed. Take this original image of a door within an abandoned barn, with the use of flash. From Drop Box As you can see the amount of light hitting this well defines all of the aspects of the term abandoned, the failing paint, the rust on the handle, the cobweb within the latch opening and generally the decadent condition overall. This much light reflects really more than I want in this photo, so rather than lowering the exposure and losing too much information (btw this works well in most well-lit sunjects, i.e. lowering exposure, I am not the best at flash adjustments, so I use PP or post

Outside Shooter First Post

 Can you remember the first time you picked up a camera and started shooting?   It was like a breath of fresh air when the film was developed. You created some photographs. Never mind that most of them were ordinary or even not-so-good. But for some of us we recognized in us an innate ability to frame or compose an occasional photo which really grabbed us and others who viewed it too. My first memorable one was of a wagon wheel, or an angle of a wagon wheel when I was a youngster. I recall most everyone who saw it just stared for a time before saying, (everyone said this) "What is it?" But an Uncle of mine looked and right away recognized it. He later went on to become the family photographer. I always enjoyed it when he looked at my photography. He could see what I could see. How do you control blur?

There are only a few ways to control blurring in your images. But there is only one element, light. How you add enough light to prevent blur is the key. Increase ISO, widen your aperture or Flash. The first two tools for adding light are the quickest and easiest options. The third, adding flash, may be easy too for those whose cameras include the unit in their models, but for those with a semi-pro to pro body camera without flash built-in, it becomes more challenging. Adding light through the use of raising ISO, while quick and easy, can create another problem, noise, though unless you show it full size or print it full size you may not notice the noise. I generally shoot in the 100-200 range ISO, but I have found myself in situations where even after opening the Aperture to it's widest I have to raise ISO to 600, 800 even higher to gain any acceptable images.   Most of the art we buy, is hopefully from an artist we have discovered and love their work. Or perhaps one we've bought from before and still love their works. And we do so with some regularity, say once a year or so, or when we redecorate and gift our prior art to another we care about. Perhaps because of age, your financial position, or because we had no room left on our walls.
