Current Competition

The theme for October 2010, our current competition is "Colors". The submission process for artists ends October 29, 2010. All winners will be selected, announced and be featured on the Light Space & Time website on November 1, 2010 and remain online in the gallery through November 30, 2010. Thereafter, the artworks will remain online in the Light Space & Time Archives with links to the artist's websites.

At the bottom of this page is a link to enter this competition, along with the procedure to enter this exhibition. The sizing and labeling of your images is very important. Please size your images, not to exceed 534 x 356 pixels with a resolution of 100. Label your image files in the following manner; last name, image number, competition name, image name. Following is an Example: Smith_1_Surfaces_Wave.jpg. Please fill the entire form and load all three (3) images before sending the upload. Also, you may upload additional images if required, along with the additional entry fees.

After the upload, go to the PayPal Payment Center and make your payment of $9.00. Additional images may be uploaded for $2.00 each. The PayPal Account Name is submissions@lightspacetime.com. After the successful upload of your images and the successful payment through PayPal, you will receive a confirmation of each procedure. A group exhibition of the top five finalists will be held online at the Light Space & Time – Online Art Gallery during the month of November 2010. Awards will be for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. In addition, 2 artists will recognized with Honorable Mention awards.

Finding the Art you choose to live with

  When you moved out of your parent's home, you landed on an empty nest even after all of your furniture was in place. Why? You saw empty walls. That was your first awareness that it's nearly impossible to live in a cave regardless the quality of furnishings and paint colors. So you set out to find art most likely at a reasonable price point. But where did you find these pieces? Too many of us selected cheaply printed photography or graphic hangings. At least we had art on the walls. After awhile we began thinking about our choices. It is this time, this entry to that awareness that we always truly wanted more than that. We wanted art for art's sake. Remember that phrase? It is true. The Art of Healing

Art, that which hangs on our walls, sits on our mantels and our dressers, is what can heal us.....   If we looked at what we choose to try healing our minds, our hearts, and our souls with, we would find that our paths wander around all sort of medicines, diets, routines of exercise and drinks, and dozens more that only give us a temporary fix.  But when we sit with a friend, or are quietly alone, we discover that the art on our walls, and the thoughts generated as we gaze at them, have a profound effect on our healing, each and every time we spend a moment with these pieces, and those moments of healing last longer and longer the more often we spend time with them. Save for Web? or Save As? EXIF is the criteria

Is EXIF an important issue to you? If not you won't get much from this. On the other hand if you are considering selling your images online this could give you an option for uploading. Let's say you are about to send some photos to a website. If your upload is to a social networking site (SNS) it's a simple 'Save for Web' command and its gone. You don't care if EXIF data attaches itself to the file or not. The photos are only for sharing. The trouble is we tend to get into a habit of uploading because of habit. And if you are sending files to an online gallery for sale or to your agent for rights managed images, or even a gallery in which you simply want to hold while adding more images for future use and you have the settings available to anyone you don't know, EXIF is crucial. Your Customer Doesn't Just Buy a Print.............

What a Client Really Wants A customer who buys your prints, doesn't just buy the pictures. They buy into the way you do your prints. And the way we shoot is to listen to the client. When I produce an image, be it a portrait shoot, a Hospital's need for a print, a University or a Corporate entity, I have to think about the reason they want to use the prints. A corporate client may want explosive splash, a University may want to explore a social aspect, a parent may want the lasting beauty of their Daughter, and so on. A baby shoot for a GrandParent vs a young couple can be quite an array of differing expectations. One couple recently told me "We want our baby's pictures for GrandPa and GrandMa's special photo wall. I want them to be able to show them off to their visiting friends and family." So the result was to produce photos which were rather a soft, cute, sweet smiling little face that we all love to look at, yet with an angle from a Grand Parenting

Are You Shooting what You Want?

It's High Time You Shot What You Like   I've caught myself reviewing my image files so many times, in order to weed out any imperfect photos, anything with blown out areas, or ones without any detail in the shadows, blur in the subject, incorrect subject framing and so on, just moving through the process of my preferred workflow. Then suddenly I'll question even why I spent the time shooting this subject. It was nothing I was particularly interested in, it simply fell into my lens. And that's ok if you don't have a subject in mind when you set out for a day of photography.  But over the years, I've developed a way to avoid this, being that time is so precious as I age, is to create a document with categories of shoots I want to newly capture or revisit.  I will even set into the document, a route link, a gps or an address, if possible. Finding Wall Art should be an Adventure

Here's to Your Wall Art Adventure First things first; whatever you do, don't just wander about and hastily make a decision on the spot. Do your research. Know what impacts your decision, allow yourself a little time to really let the emotive part of the art search grab ahold of you, and only then make the leap.  Just know you're doing it for the right reasons. That's the best advice I can offer. Getting caught up in the art you see at farmer's markets or at mall shops, or even big box locations, has wreaked havoc when later, art buyers are having second thoughts. I would suggest you spend some reasonable amount of time pursuing your choices.  Do this for you and you'll not regret it. Interview On ICC Profile

Rich Collins Printing out our own photos is something we all do. But getting results that we are happy with is another matter. While t his article is not going to tell us how to do this, (I will deal with this in another Post), we should all have an unde rstanding as to what helps us accomplish this. The famed ICC Profile, which hopeful ly we've all heard of and most of us are at least minimally familiar with, is a key component in the mix. Here to answer a few critical questions is Ethan Hansen of Dry Creek Photo. Dry Creek Photo provides printer profiles for the Commercial end of print processors, or Lab, that we, as photographers, use for our enlargements.
