Before you Rush to Hang or Replace Photographic Art, Take a Breather

Are We Viewing and Choosing Fine Art Photography Better than we used to?

Remember when buying art in a retail store was good enough? How about the frames that came with them? There wasn't much of a choice. Yet we bought them, we hung them and we lived with them. But after awhile we found ourselves searching for a better way.

Once the internet exploded, so too did the number of artists offering a vast assortment of hanging art in many styles, genre and choice of B&W or Color treatments.

Please tap on the links to see my work on my website, or the pics to see the image alone

Such as this from collection Maritime Wall Art

which places emphasis on the ship more so than on the tent on land while adding a very unusual color to the ship.Makes for a conversation piece, rather than a mere typical maritime photograph

Or this example from another collection WATER

This one dramatically places the light beneath the waterfall's churning surface, unlike from the sky as normal. Again this can elicit a conversational enjoyment while viewing

And even this one Latourelle Falls 6

Anyone viewing this one on your wall will most likely find it quite different in that the main focus is not on the waterfall itself but the beautiful shades of the basalt rock wall behind it

So what we find in contemporary wall art is a far better set of choices than we used to be able to locate, today, than we used to, whether we are searching in a retail store, in Mostar galleries, and even online, so don't assume this takes a special effort to find what you have put off, or are about to venture into. Art choices today are endless. It can become almost literally the endless search if you let it. You can start in any search engine and find so many links.

Please feel free to try mine just because you're here, and its as easy as tapping on the links to begin your search for your own wall art or as a gift. (Shameless self-promotion 🤩)

And I'd very much appreciate a comment below if you find this helpful by letting me know how, this post has helped you, (rather than just a thanks, if you will. And thank you

Shopping for Wall Art......Can be Done Room by Room

Shopping for Wall Art can feel overwhelming. There are so many websites, so much wall art and styles, it's a jungle. But it doesn't have to be

Shopping by Room, on the other hand, can narrow it down to an easier approach and will keep you focused. Yet there are some steps you'll need to get done first......

1. Your Home Size

It depends on a number of considerations, and one of them is your home, as to what styles and sizes of art are appropriate. For example it's hard to imagine an eclectic set of large and space-taking wall and floor art pieces fitting in a smaller home. It's simply not going to happen. Those homes, which are the majority of homes in America, and globally, for that matter, won't accommodate floor pieces, like one sees in an art gallery or a museum, or gigantic wall art pieces. And even the very large prints cannot fit in a townhome or a ranch home. You have to start first with what space you have, then start looking for what will fit. Of course you can rearrange your furniture to make space, but overall the size of your rooms and window locations, will dictate the size of your art pieces.

2. Your Wall Space

So before you go running off to a gallery in town, take a serious look at the available space you have first. The last thing you want to face, is wondering why you bought those pieces when you really have no room for it. You want to be sure the wall art you buy, will look right and fit right. And when you already have art in places, selectively replacing those with wall art that is more toward your liking, and the fit, becomes more appropriate. But the next step is not what you think. You are not ready to buy yet.

3. Your Room

The next step systematically choose a single room, you are going to focus on first. In this case you may want to start with your bedroom, or your living room, choose one, only one to start with. You should pick a room that is the most important room to begin with. This is probably not going to be your hallway or your laundry room. Whatever room you choose you want to make an impact to yourself and to your visitors. It's personally important to me to be able to fully enjoy my surroundings, and I suspect this is true for you as well.

4. The Removal

Now physically remove the pieces you are thinking about replacing. That way you can get a better feel for the size you'll want to replace the space with. It might be a larger one, it might be a smaller one. But you won't really get a good grasp, without taking it down and walking back into the room with a fresh look. This step is perhaps as important as the wall art you will buy, because without doing this you will find it difficult to sense what will fit and what you'll want to replace your existing art with. So just don't think about it, just do it. It's necessary.

And remember, the art you are going to buy should also enhance, not only your existing furniture and the rooms sizes, but the value of your home. And we've all seen what a clutter some of our friends and family have had to deal with because of not focusing on how to enhance a room. Ultimately when selling a home, you won't have to take down a single piece of wall art, if you've followed these steps correctly.

5. Storing Your Old Art

Then once you have determined how much wall space you have in that room, by removing all of the art you have taken down, consider where you are going to store your previous pieces. You may have a spare room, you may have a closet that you can remove the shelving out of for storing taller items. Some of us have room in our garage. If you choose your garage, be sure to keep your pieces wrapped or boxed to prevent moisture from damaging your art. Some of us already have a heated storage rental. You may have a family member or a friend that would enjoy hanging your art for a time. Another option of course is selling your previous art. You can put the word out, or have a listing online or hold a small garage sale in a neighborhood with others. Or you may want to consider trading your old art, for something of value with a friend or family member. Possibilities exist and unless you are strongly attached to the piece you are replacing, make a change, make a move.

6. Don't Break the Bank

So we all know art can be expensive. It depends on how you buy it. But it can be reasonable if you are careful. You'll want to stay within your means and take a close look at how well you are managing your debt. And if you carry a good to great credit rating, you will be fine. If not, you may want to rethink if this is the right time to jump in. Or you might consider doing just one room, or one piece at a time. You'll know what's right.

7. Where to Start Shopping

I can only say that when I considered listing my art, I reviewed dozens of online art sales websites. And after nearly a year of thorough research, I found that keeping my art at my own website, but with the managing of the process through Fine Art America, I was able to give the buyer, the most complete and simple transaction, and choices of not only the wall art pieces themselves, but many options from a mere Greeting Card, to Yoga Mats, Shower Curtains, Duvet Covers, Throw Pillows,  Puzzles, and so on. The list is so inclusive and fun, you will find it a pleasant alternative to what else is out there. Do yourself a favor, stroll through my site Rich Collins now or after you have followed the steps in this article.

And do send an email to yourself with this article URL address to find it again as you ready your home for a fresh look. May I suggest you title it,
